Gospel Printing Mission was founded by David Cotton in 1960, operating a hand-printing press in his father’s garden shed. David began designing and printing text cards containing the Good News of Jesus to share with others. Soon he was doing this in other languages, and leaflets were sent to the Congo, Angola and Mozambique. Before long letters were being received telling of the conversions of people through reading the tracts.
The work operated from various premises before moving to a former Gospel Hall in Plaistow.
It is a faith-based work, and over the years God provided all the needs - from printing presses to stamps for the parcels. Each year hundreds of thousands of tracts have been distributed for free across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. By 2020 the ministry was sending out tracts in thirty-five languages to fifty-seven countries, and had distributed over 67 million tracts and booklets in total.
In late 2023 the Trustees of GPM approached OPAL Trust, a ministry involved in distributing Bibles and evangelical literature to Majority World countries, and they asked whether OPAL would consider continuing the ministry. After much prayer and discussion, the trustees of OPAL agreed that this work should become part of OPAL’s ministry, and in early 2025 the merger was made official.
